Learning English by noticing the world around me

Image
For a long time, I believe that that English only happened when we’ve opened our textbooks or answered questions in class. I thought, speaking and writing were the only ways to improve. However, one classroom experience helped me realize that English can be learned quietly simply by paying attention to the world around us. One day, our teacher asked us to sit calmly and observe of a surroundings. We were not allowed to talk or right. Instead, we had to listen carefully and notice in English words of precious we had. At first, I felt confuse because I had never learned this way before.. But slowly, I started noticing things I had ignored before such as an English song playing softly, words on the poster near the classroom, and short conversations among friends. When we share the observations, I felt surprised. I had discovered so much without opening a book. That moment helped me understand that English exists everywhere , not just inside books or lessons. Learning became mo...

Learning English through kindness and teamwork

Image
I used to think that learning English meant sitting quietly, mesmerizing words, and try not to make mistakes. Speaking in front of others made me nervous, and I often worried about being getting judged. However, one classroom experience completely changed the way I felt about learning English. One day, our teacher divided us into small groups and gave us a simple task, which was “help each other complete a short English activity.” Each group member had a small role such as one person rate, another road, and another shared ideas. What surprise me was how kind and support you everyone became. When someone struggle, others help instead of laughing. That day, English felt less scary and more like teamwork. As we work together, I  realized that learning English is not only about no words  or grammar. It is also about helping, listening, and encouraging one another. When I made a mistake, my friends smiled, and helped me correct it. That gave me confidence to try again. Slowly...

Finding my voice through English

Learning English was not always easy for me. For a long time, I believed that English was not only about grammar, Rose, writing exercises , and exams. Space I was afraid of making mistakes, especially when speaking in front of others. I often stayed silent in class, even when I knew the answer. I thought speaking in creating English would make others laugh at me. Everything slowly change when my teacher encourage us to use English in simple and creative ways. Instead of focusing on mistakes, she asked us to share a small stories, Personal experiences, an idea. One day, we were asked to talk about something we enjoy doing in our free time. I spoke about listening to music. My sentences were not perfect, but my teachers smile and encourage me to continue. That moment gave me confidence. I real realize that English was not about being perfect. It was about expressing myself. When I spoke, my classmates, listen, and that made me feel valued. From that day, I became more willing to spe...

Learning Through Stories : When English Comes Alive

Image
Learning English becomes truly meaningful when students connect with it emotionally. One of the most powerful ways to create this connection is through storytelling. Stories allow students  to imagine, feel and express themselves freely. In my experiences as a teacher, I have seen how stories can transform even the quietest classroom into a space full of confidence, creativity, and joy. In one of my lessons, I decided to move beyond the textbook and introduce a simple storytelling activity to my students. I asked students to think about a small moment in their lives such as a happy memory, a funny incident, or even an imaginary situation. They only needed to to share a story in their own way as they did not have to write perfectly or use difficult words. At first some students hesitated. But once one student started, others followed with excitement. What surprised me most was how confident the shy students became. When stories were involved, they forgot their fear of making ...

Learning English Beyond The Classroom Walls

Image
Learning English does not stop when students leave the classroom, in fact some of the most meaningful and effective learnings happen outside the four walls of classroom. For examples in  conversations, daily routines, and real-life experiences we  use many English words knowingly and unknowingly. As a teacher, I have seen How students become more confident and motivated when they realize that English is not only a subject but a part of our everyday lives.  In the classroom, students often focus on grammar rules, spellings and sentence structures. While these are important, true language learning happens when students use English naturally. I once asked my students  to observe how English appears in their daily surroundings such as shop boards, television, mobile phones, product labels and even social media. At first, they were surprised as they had never noticed how often English appeared around them. The next day, students excitedly shared what they found. So...

Small Activities, Big Confidence

Image
Confidence does not always grow from big achievements. In my experience as an English teacher, it often begins with the smallest activities such as simple tasks that allow  students to feel safe, capable, and heard. Many learners enter the English classroom with fear, but with right activities chosen by the teacher, even the quietest student will begin to shine. So confidence is something we teachers should help to build up in the child even though it is the duty of parents as teachers we also share a responsibility to do so. I have learned that confidence grows when student experience success in small steps. A short sentence spoken aloud, a shared idea or a smile after completing a  task can completely change how is he/she feeling about English Language. These moments may seem small, but they carry great power. One such moment happened during a recent grade 6 classroom activity that reminds me how powerful small task can be. I asked my students of grade 6 class to choose two ...

Teaching English from the Heart

Image
As an English teacher, I have often noticed a familiar look on my students' faces when I write on the blackboard. It is a look of attention mixed with hesitation. For many learners, English feels like a subject filled with rules, corrections, and exams. Teaching English has taught me something deeply personal that language is not learned only through rules, but through trust, emotion, and human connections. Over the years, I have realized that the most powerful lessons I teach do not always come from the textbook or the blackboard, they come from moments when students feel seen, heard, and safe enough to try. In many classrooms, English is associated with fear; fear of not being good enough, fear of mistakes, and fear of being laughed at. I have seen students who understand grammar perfectly  but hesitate to speak a single word. As a TESL teacher, this made me question my role; Am I only responsible for teaching language , or  Am I also responsible for building confidence?. Th...

Technology on Language Learning and Teaching

Image
Language is something we always need for communication and learning an international language is helping us to improve our personality so do the ENGLISH . Learning and teaching a foreign language in  country like Sri Lanka is not a piece of cake. So , in  my POV we need to do something more than in our teachers' guides ,students' pupils' books and work books. Today, technology has pushed learning far beyond that traditional space. As educators and learners we  must step Beyond the Blackboard , and embrace the outside world and see how  Technology is reshaping the ways of English is taught, practiced, and experienced making  learning and teaching  more engaging, flexible and inclusive. When we, educators of government sector schools are bound to work according to curriculums and more focused on completing full syllabus on time, it really make our learners distracted as we repeat the same cycle daily at classroom. So, Technology offers various digital to...
