Finding my voice through English

Learning English was not always easy for me. For a long time, I believed that English was not only about grammar, Rose, writing exercises , and exams. Space I was afraid of making mistakes, especially when speaking in front of others. I often stayed silent in class, even when I knew the answer. I thought speaking in creating English would make others laugh at me.

Everything slowly change when my teacher encourage us to use English in simple and creative ways. Instead of focusing on mistakes, she asked us to share a small stories, Personal experiences, an idea. One day, we were asked to talk about something we enjoy doing in our free time. I spoke about listening to music. My sentences were not perfect, but my teachers smile and encourage me to continue. That moment gave me confidence.

I real realize that English was not about being perfect. It was about expressing myself. When I spoke, my classmates, listen, and that made me feel valued. From that day, I became more willing to speak, participate, and even help my friends when they were nervous.

Outside the classroom, I started noticing English is everywhere such as on mobile apps, TV shows, songs, and even show boards. I began using simple English words when talking with friends. Slowly, English became a part of my daily life rather than a school subject.

This experience taught me that learning English is not limited to books or classrooms. It grows through practice, encouragement, and confidence. When teachers create a safe and friendly environment, students feel brave enough to use the language. I now understand that making a mistake is part of learning, not something to fear.

English has helped me express my thoughts, understand others, and believe in myself. I am still learning, but I am no longer afraid. Learning English has helped me find my voice.

In many Sri Lankan classrooms, students hesitate to speak English due to fear of  mistakes. This story reflects how encouragement and support can help learn a overcome fear and use English naturally in their life.

This guest post was created through a reflection of my experiences in learning English. My heart felt gratitude to Upekha Iroshani as she invited me to post on her blog.
