Learning English Beyond The Classroom Walls

Learning English does not stop when students leave the classroom, in fact some of the most meaningful and effective learnings happen outside the four walls of classroom. For examples in  conversations, daily routines, and real-life experiences we  use many English words knowingly and unknowingly. As a teacher, I have seen How students become more confident and motivated when they realize that English is not only a subject but a part of our everyday lives.

In the classroom, students often focus on grammar rules, spellings and sentence structures. While these are important, true language learning happens when students use English naturally. I once asked my students  to observe how English appears in their daily surroundings such as shop boards, television, mobile phones, product labels and even social media. At first, they were surprised as they had never noticed how often English appeared around them.

The next day, students excitedly shared what they found. Some talked about English words on buses and shops. Others mentioned English songs, advertisements, and captions on social media. Even the shy students were eager to speak because they ere sharing real experiences. They realized that English was not limited to textbooks and it was already a part of their world.

I also remind them in Sinhala, we use many English terms such as following in our daily communication in Sri Lanka.

  • Bus
  • Car
  • Bag
  • Shirt
  • Teacher
  • Charger
  • Internet
  • Laptop
  • Phone
  • Fridge
  • Sofa
  • Fan
  • Gas
These are often called loan words. They do not have a commonly used or natural Sinhala equivalent, or the English word is more familiar in daily life. And also English words are shorter and easier to use.

Mixing English with Sinhala is a part of our identity. It shows how language evolves with culture, education and global influence. Recognizing  English in daily life helps students understand its real purpose and encourages confident communication beyond school.

I cordially invite you all to comment about  English words or sentences you see outside the classroom but surrounded by yourself and do not forget to mention where did you find them. THANK YOU ALL!!

BTS Note
This article was inspired by classroom discussions where students shared real life encounters with English outside the school. I reflected on how meaningful learning happens when students connect language with their environment. The visual element  was captured by my phone as they were the things I have used as examples to show my students to prove we are surrounded by English.
