Learning English by noticing the world around me
For a long time, I believe that that English only happened when we’ve opened our textbooks or answered questions in class. I thought, speaking and writing were the only ways to improve. However, one classroom experience helped me realize that English can be learned quietly simply by paying attention to the world around us.
One day, our teacher asked us to sit calmly and observe of a surroundings. We were not allowed to talk or right. Instead, we had to listen carefully and notice in English words of precious we had. At first, I felt confuse because I had never learned this way before.. But slowly, I started noticing things I had ignored before such as an English song playing softly, words on the poster near the classroom, and short conversations among friends.
When we share the observations, I felt surprised. I had discovered so much without opening a book. That moment helped me understand that English exists everywhere , not just inside books or lessons. Learning became more natural, endless stressful.
After that activity, I began to pay closer attention in my daily life. I noticed English words on buses, food, packets, television programs, and even in mobile applications. Listening carefully help me understand, pronunciation, and meaning better. Without pressure, my confidence slowly improved.
This experiences also helped me appreciate the value of patience and awareness. In our culture, Kamar, listening carefully a sine of respect. When we listen with attention, we learn more deeply, so English learning became enjoyable as it felt connected to real life rather than exams or marks.
Through this experience, I realize that language learning does not always require effect of fear. Sometimes it simply requires awareness. When we observe, listen, and reflect, learning happens naturally beyond the blackboard.
In Srilanka Society, careful listening, is linked to respect and understanding. This activity connects, cultural values with language learning and helps students real realize that English is a part of everyday life.
This blog post was inspired by a classroom observation activity where students learned through listening, and awareness. The ideas were shaped through reflection and discussion rather than digital tools. This processed allowed me to explore how learning can happen quietly and naturally beyond the blackboard. I would like to thank Upekha Iroshani for inviting me to post on her blog as a guest to share my thoughts. All the best Upekha !!!
