Technology on Language Learning and Teaching

Language is something we always need for communication and learning an international language is helping us to improve our personality so do the ENGLISH. Learning and teaching a foreign language in  country like Sri Lanka is not a piece of cake.

So , in  my POV we need to do something more than in our teachers' guides ,students' pupils' books and work books. Today, technology has pushed learning far beyond that traditional space. As educators and learners we  must step Beyond the Blackboard, and embrace the outside world and see how  Technology is reshaping the ways of English is taught, practiced, and experienced making  learning and teaching  more engaging, flexible and inclusive. When we, educators of government sector schools are bound to work according to curriculums and more focused on completing full syllabus on time, it really make our learners distracted as we repeat the same cycle daily at classroom. So, Technology offers various digital tools that  provide learners with exposure to authentic English through videos, podcasts, blogs, online newspapers, and social media platforms. Students are no longer limited to scripted textbook dialogues; instead they can now listen to real conversations, accents and contexts around the world. Some of my favorite podcast shows are Happy Place by Fearne Cotton , Great Company with Jamie Laing , The Mel Robbins Podcast. I suggest them to you all as they really helpful for learners of English.

Technology also supports learner - centered instruction. Language - learning apps, online quizzes, and interactive platforms allow students to learn at their own pace. A learner who struggles with grammar can revisit explanation and practice repeatedly, while a more  advanced learner can explore creative writing, debate forums or advanced reading tasks. This personalization is difficult to achieve in a traditional classroom but becomes possible through digital tools.

For teachers, technology offers innovative ways of enhance instructions rather than replace it. Multimedia presentations, digital storytelling, and online discussion boards make lessons more dynamic and engaging. Teachers can use videos to introduce topics, online polls to check understanding and collaborative documents to promote group writing. These tools of technology encourage active participation and help shift the teacher's role from information provider to facilitator and guide.

However moving Beyond the Blackboard also requires responsibility and balance. Technology should be used thoughtfully, ensuring it supports learning objectives rather than distracting from them. Teachers must guide students in digital literacy, ethical use of online resources and respectful communication. equitable access to technology is also essential so that no learner is left behind.

Absolutely, Technology has transformed English language teaching and learning into a more interactive, flexible and authentic experience. When we used technology purposefully, it empowers both teachers and learners to go beyond traditional methods and engage with English as a living, global language.

At Beyond the Blackboard, this transformation is not just about tools, it is about  expanding possibilities for communication, creativity and lifelong learning.
